Paint effects
Expression Design offers twelve different Paint live effects: Accented Edges, Dark Strokes, Dry Brush, Fresco, Paint Daubs, Palette Knife, Spatter, Sponge, Sprayed Strokes, Sumi-e, Watercolor, and Water Paper. You can apply each of these settings from the Paint submenu in the Live Effects menu. For more information, see Effects.
For reference below, here are the original three objects (no
effects applied):
a bitmapped image, a rectangle with a
gradient, and a text object.
Accented Edges
The Accented Edges live effect simulates painting around the edges in your image. The settings are Edge width, Edge brightness, and Smoothness. Accented Edges has little to no effect on vector artwork or images with very flat colors.
The Dark Strokes live effect simulates painting an image with high-contrast dark and colored paint strokes. The settings are Balance, Black intensity, and White intensity. Dark Strokes has little to no effect on vector artwork or images with very flat colors.
The Dry Brush live effect simulates painting the image with paint on a dry brush. The settings are Brush size, Brush detail, and Texture. Dry Brush has little to no effect on vector artwork or images with very flat colors.
The Fresco live effect simulates painting the image onto wet plaster. The parameters you can control are Brush size, Brush detail, and Texture. Fresco has little to no effect on vector artwork or images with very flat colors.
The Paint Daubs live effect creates the appearance of painting the image by repeatedly daubing the paintbrush on the canvas. The settings are Brush size, Brush type, and Sharpness. You can create radically different effects by changing the Brush type. Paint Daubs has little to no effect on vector artwork or images with very flat colors.
The Palette Knife live effect simulates painting an image by spreading paint on a canvas with a palette knife (or painting knife). The settings are Stroke size, Stroke detail, and Softness. Palette Knife has little to no effect on vector artwork or images with very flat colors.
The Spatter live effect creates an appearance of paint being spattered on a canvas. The settings are Spray radius and Smoothness.
The Sponge live effect simulates daubing paper with wet paint on a sponge. The settings are Brush size, Definition, and Smoothness.
The Sprayed Strokes live effect creates the appearance of paint or ink sprayed onto paper. You can control Stroke length, Stroke direction, and Spray radius.
The Sumi-e ("soo-mee-eh") live effect creates the appearance of thick black and colored ink strokes on white paper. The settings are Stroke width, Stroke pressure, and Contrast. Sumi-e has little to no effect on vector artwork or images with very flat colors.
The Watercolor live effect simulates painting an image with watercolors. The settings are Brush detail, Shadow intensity, and Texture. This live effect is particularly useful when applied to an object that also has a texture. Watercolor has little to no effect on vector artwork or images with very flat colors.
The Water Paper live effect simulates the effect of drawing the image or object on a rough textured paper and then applying water to it. The settings are Fiber length, Brightness, and Contrast.
